Blank Flame

In Blank Flame, the rapid fluctuations of a flame animated by subtle air currents evolve into an inquiry into visual mechanisms, material displacement, and sensory perception. The work empties the flame of its inherent luminescence and color, substituting it with the weathered yellow paint and precise markings of an old wooden ruler. The flame ceases to be a mere radiant entity; instead, it transforms into a living, breathing negative window.

As the fire's contours tremble and sway, the continuous, rigid numbers and scale markings are perpetually cropped, fractured, and reassembled by the flame’s dynamic edge. Refusing to impose grand conceptual definitions, the piece focuses on the visceral shock delivered by the mechanism of "implanting a rigid texture into fluid motion." By generating absurdity and misalignment in the gap between the measurable and the unmeasurable, the work forcibly deconstructs habitual perceptions of mundane objects, re-anchoring the act of viewing within an open and undetermined perceptual state.
