The Narrow Bridge

Selected Frames from The Narrow Bridge

The Narrow Bridge is a single-channel video artwork combining mobile documentation and somatic performance. The work originates from the artist’s gaze upon his own shadow while walking away from the sun, adopting an observational stance of "not fully merging with the world." Within this state, the shadow serves as a mediator connecting the body to its surroundings—and as the origin of bodily movement.

Using a smartphone to record the process of following his shadow, Le Xi vertically aligns his feet with the shadow through the lens, allowing body and shadow to continuously merge—rendering the artist the "shadow of his shadow." The shadow, originally secondary to the physical form, reverses its role to become a structural visual framework guiding physical motion. As the body advances, the shadow simultaneously anchors physical presence and continually detaches from it, generating a subtle translation between plane and space.

The Narrow Bridge does not attempt to define what a shadow is; rather, through the body’s pursuit of its shadow, it translates an otherwise intangible form into a navigable spatial domain. The work establishes an unstable link between body and shadow, substance and immateriality—rendering "presence" a continuously shifting state of being.
