Stand Still
Selected Frames from Stand Still
Self-Portrait: Stand Still is a single-channel video artwork combining real-time recording and somatic performance. The work originates from the artist's personal practice of standing motionless with his back to the sun, facing a grassy lawn—using a phone camera to maintain a rigid "standard portrait" composition, juxtaposing bodily stillness with the continuous flow of time within a single frame.
Across an unedited span of time, the camera captures shifting shadows, the gentle swaying of blades of grass in the wind, and the subtle physiological rhythm of the body. Projecting his physical form as a medium within the space, the artist allows the self to dissolve into the environmental interplay through raw, unmediated recording. This low-tech practice dissolves the boundary between institutional spaces and daily life while destabilizing traditional art-historical categories between "self-portraiture" and "landscape," creating a minimalist tension between somatic immobility and botanical flux.
Self-Portrait: Stand Still reduces its visual language to fixed composition, shifting shadows, plant kinetics, physical presence, and duration. Preserving this everyday act as a quiet visual record of somatic engagement and temporal perception, the work redefines the threshold between daily life and artistic practice.
