Three selected frames from the stop-motion video artwork Napkin (Year) by Le Xi, showing paper unfolding to reveal accumulated physical pressure and structural deformation.

Napkin

Selected Frames from Napkin

Napkin is a stop-motion video rooted in an everyday object, focusing on an overlooked micro-physical process: how the force exerted by the body on matter continues to reside within it long after the action itself has ceased.

While the utility and functional value of a used napkin expire upon disposal, the pressure, friction, and deformation accumulated during its use do not vanish; they remain archived as physical marks within the paper's state. The work re-situates this invisible corporeal stress back into the flow of time, enabling a past action to be perceived once again.

Here, "unfolding" is not a mere restoration of the object, but a topological re-passing through time that has already transpired. The shifting state of the paper ceases to be a simple change in form, serving instead as tangible evidence of a relationship between body and matter—one that has ended, yet continues to leave its mark.

Ultimately, the work centers not on the napkin itself, but on how everyday behavior leaves traces of existence on the most trivial matter. The forces, gestures, and time casually ignored after an action concludes never truly disappear; they remain embedded within the material itself.
