In 2015, I mentored the graduation projects for ten students from the New Media Art Department (Class of 2011) at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute (SCFAI). This teaching practice was a deliberate challenge to the boundaries of traditional cinematography. Through the core concepts of "In Front and Behind the Camera" and "The Mysterious Loop," we pushed the definition of the "moving image" far beyond the constraints of linear screen-based storytelling.
2015年,我负责指导四川美术学院新媒体艺术系2011级影视班10位同学的毕业创作。这次教学实践是对传统影视边界的一次自觉挑战。通过“相机前后”与“神秘的循环”这两个核心命题,我们力求将“影像”的定义推向更远,突破线性屏幕叙事的局限。
Beyond the Screen: Material & Cultural Reconstructions
屏幕之外:媒介与文化的重构
The exhibition transformed the conventional pedagogical space into a multi-dimensional artistic laboratory. The students moved beyond digital editing to engage with art history, mass media, and the textures of daily survival through visceral interventions: 最终的展览将传统教学空间转化为了多维度的艺术实验室。学生们超越了单纯的数码剪辑,通过直观的物理介入,对艺术史、大众媒介以及日常生存的质感展开对话:
Physicalizing Art History | 艺术史的物理化 In a bold reinterpretation of Action Painting, one student utilized countless balloons to simulate the rhythmic energy of Jackson Pollock’s work, transforming the "canvas" into a three-dimensional spatial installation. 在对“行动绘画”的激进诠释中,一名学生利用无数气球模拟了波洛克作品中的节奏能量,将“画布”转化为三维的空间装置。
Mechanical Deconstruction | 机械化解构 Another project mechanically segmented the iconic portrait of Marilyn Monroe into a grid of digital-style image compositions, questioning how narrative and celebrity are controlled and reconstructed in the age of network resources. 另一件作品将标志性的玛丽莲·梦露肖像机械运动地分割为数码风格的图像组合,质疑了网络资源时代叙事与名人符号是如何被支配与重构的。

A crucial dimension of the mentorship focused on disrupting the passive spectator, forcing the viewer's body to actively cross the threshold of the artwork: 教学指导的一个核心维度在于打破观众的被动观看状态,迫使观者的身体主动跨越艺术品的边界:
Homage to Light and Space | 向光与空间致敬 Paying homage to James Turrell, one student constructed a luminous, white cube-like physical entity nestled in a corner. The audience was invited to physically submerge their heads inside the structure, experiencing an immersive dissolution of spatial boundaries and optical perception. 在一件向詹姆斯·特瑞尔致敬的作品中,一名学生在墙角安置了一个立方体的白光实体装置。装置邀请观众将头部伸入其中,从而切身经历一种空间边界与视知觉的沉浸式消解。
Labor, Ritual & The "Mysterious Loop"

A significant portion of the exhibition focused on the meditative power of repetitive action—turning daily habits into artistic rituals: 展览的很大一部分集中于重复性动作的冥想力量——将日常习惯转化为艺术仪式:
The Unraveling of the Self | 自我的解体 One student performed a profound spatial intervention by unraveling their own tight-fitting sweater, meticulously wrapping the single continuous thread around the four walls of their bedroom. This act transformed a personal garment into a geometric boundary of lived experience. 一名学生进行了一次深刻的空间介入:拆解自己身穿的紧身毛衣,将那一根长长的毛线沿着卧室的四面墙整齐排列缠绕。这一行为将个人的衣物转化为了生活经验的几何边界。
Reclassifying Knowledge | 知识的重构 In an extreme feat of transcription, another student hand-wrote the entire contents of the Xinhua Dictionary onto colored fabric strips. By reclassifying language through a new color system and winding them into two massive circular color discs, the student created a physical loop of cultural data. 在一次极端的书写实践中,另一名学生将《新华字典》的全部内容手写在彩色布条上。通过颜色对文字进行重新分类,并最终缠绕成两大彩色圆盘,学生创造了一个文化数据的物理循环。
The works spanned Performance Video, daily media installations, and the grafting of digital components onto living trees, exploring how "personal objects" are created in a technologically entangled world. 作品涵盖了行为影像、日常媒介装置以及数码零件与活体树木的嫁接,探索了在技术纠缠的世界中如何创造属于“个人的物体”。
Reflection | 结语
This exhibition was not merely a display of academic results, but a collective investigation into how the individual's survival context can be integrated into the architecture of an image. It remains a testament to how art strategically enters daily life, creating a "stop" in the rhythm of the world—much like silence in a musical composition.
这场展览不仅是教学成果的展示,更是一场集体调研,探讨个人的生存处境如何被整合进影像的结构之中。它见证了艺术如何策略性地进入日常生活,在日常的惯性中创造出一种“停顿”——正如音乐中不可或缺的静默。
