Husband and Wife Run in Sync

Husband and Wife Run in Sync is a single-channel digital video work by artist Le Xi. Responding to Marina Abramović and Ulay’s seminal 1977 performance Relation in Time, the work attempts to strip performance art of traditional bodily theatricality and emotional drama, pivoting toward a digital deconstruction of "pure behavioral movement."

Centered on the subtext of "marital tacit understanding and dynamic tension," the artist gathered and frame-by-frame extracted imagery of a couple running in place in sync with hands behind their backs. Through digital de-individualization, the subjects' faces, identities, and cultural backgrounds are completely evaporated, leaving only a debodied kinetic trajectory. Within the video, the overlapping physical boundary shared by the two bodies is translated into a chromatic band that constantly shifts alongside bodily movement. This visualization—resembling a dynamic energy spectrum—real-time quantifies the abstract compression, compromise, and rhythmic tension of gender interaction into a visible spatial force.

Abandoning performance art's historical reliance on the artist's physical endurance, the work shifts from "painful corporeal confrontation" to a "rational extraction of energy vectors" through digital media. It liberates performance art from linear time and static spatial frameworks, redefining the complexity and multiplicity of behavioral essence in the digital age.
