Crouch: Exploring the Digital Paradox in Animation by Le Xi
I look at the contradictions between digital technology, which isn't physical, and the real world and our bodies. I'm exploring how automation, digitization, and technology affect our daily lives, consciousness, and sense of self. This paradox has become one of the main themes in my work.
Using my work "Crouch" as an example, I chose "crouch" as the theme for my animation. The repetitive movement reflects ideas of obedience, defense, protection, and resistance. Using Adobe Animate, I investigate the boundary between hand-drawing and digital replication, blending mechanical lines with physiological rhythms. I frame-by-frame illustrated the shift between losing purpose and finding meaning, capturing the complexity of individuals’ fragility and resilience in a digital world, as well as their search for self-identity amidst uncertainty.
I built a body based on lines, where the individual gradually merges with these lines and data through replication and abstraction. I adjusted the animation speed according to my breathing and heartbeat, making each crouch resonate with my physiological rhythm. By introducing delays and variations in rhythm, I created flashes of life and awareness, highlighting the fragility and strength of individuals.
Through an extremely simplified digital language, I redefine the essence of animation: emphasizing movement as a form of thought expression rather than telling a story. The body continues in its disintegration, the individual fades in repetition, and life re-emerges in the most abstract lines. In endless repetition, movement becomes a confirmation of existence and a steadfast assertion of "being present."
The process of creation itself is my presence, as frame-by-frame animation immerses me in the dynamic interplay of reality and abstraction. The infinite scaling of vector graphics allows me to experience the blurred boundaries between imagination and space, as well as between abstraction and reality in the digital age. This exploration is not just about technology; it’s also a profound reflection on identity and existence.
