AAA-AAA by Le Xi

 AAA-AAA by Le Xi is a single-channel digital video work that reconfigures body expression. Responding to Marina Abramović and Ulay’s seminal 1978 performance AAA-AAA, the work translates a gesture originally rooted in physical presence, vocal endurance, and face-to-face friction into a purely visual relationship detached from the concrete body.

The work's focus is not the scream itself, but what remains of expression once sound is evacuated. Emotions, confrontations, and exchanges originally dependent on the voice are compressed into pure kinetic movements of opening, contracting, and oscillating within space. Personal identity is subsequently uncoupled from the physical body, resolving into a dynamic state no longer bound to a specific individual.

In doing so, the work cleanly separates "expression" from speech and sound: when the voice can no longer solidify intent, and specific identities are erased, in what form does human relationship persist?

The two forms in the video no longer represent two concrete individuals; instead, they are translated into a dynamic relationship of approaching, resisting, and responding to one another. Internal emotional forces are transformed into a pure movement vibrating between forms—devoid of a speaker or a language needing decipherment yet continuously generating micro-responses.

AAA-AAA by Le Xi is not a digital reproduction of the original performance. Through muting, de-individualization, and de-embodiment, it interrogates the minimal unit of expression: after language, identity, and the concrete body are stripped away, can human connection still endure as a pure movement of energy?
